About

luthier

| ˈluːtɪə | noun a maker of stringed instruments such as violins or guitars.

“I create new, handmade violins, violas, and cellos - each crafted with care and available from stock - and also welcome bespoke commissions, including smaller instruments when required.

In addition to building instruments, I produce and sell traditional lake pigments for colouring varnish, and, in collaboration with Fiddle Daemons, design and make violin restoration clamps.

Every instrument is built from the finest materials, using time-honoured Italian methods. The wood I use is sourced from the same forests once chosen by the old masters, and each piece is finished with varnish prepared from historical recipes. The result is an instrument with beauty, depth, and a rich tonal range that projects with power and character.

In my workshop, I’m most often inspired by the work of the Guarneri family of Cremona - particularly Guarneri del Gesù - and by Gasparo da Salò of Brescia, who is known for stunning sounding violas, but also made wonderful violins. I also create instruments based on other great makers, which can be commissioned on request.

My work is supported by a large stock of the finest seasoned tonewoods, some many decades old, gathered over years of careful selection - available both for my own instruments and for those crafted to order.”
